Problem with new install

Hello, all.

I was given a boxed Microsoft Office XP Professional, Version 2002 as a
gift. All original software. I installed it, and it worked fine, but
Outlook isn't behaving.

When I start Outlook, I get, "Unable to open your default e-mail
folders." I click to go on, and I get the following: "Would you like to
open your default File System folder instead?" I say, "Yes" and it
proceeds.

When Outlook opens, I click on "Tools" and look for the indicated "Create
e-mail account" command, but it isn't there. I can't do anything wrt mail.

Now, I've had Outlook installed before, and took it off. I've checked
Add/Remove programs to make sure there are no conflicting versions that
might be messing things up. I'm really stumped.

My Outlook version is 2002 and my op sys is WinXP SR2.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Try with a new profile and new PST created via the Mail icon in Control
Panel. I suspect since you had Outlook installed before it is looking for an
old profile it can't locatea PST for.

Hey, it got me almost there! Thanks!

I can't get the test e-mail to send -- everything else tests fine. Is
there anyone here on gmail that will share some wisdom here?

Also, at the left of my screen, there is the old vertical bar that
contains shortcuts to Outlook's various pieces. The bar is completely
blank except for a tab that says "Outlook Shortcuts" and another tab, I
think, that says "Personal Shortcuts." This is very unusual.

I really appreciate the help.

Gmail usually works with the settings Gmail provides. I think it might
require authentication but that should be all on the Gmail support page.
If it doesn't work with theory settings then look for applications that
might be blocking that port. Also don't use email antivirus integration
which might interfere with email settings.

Nothing is in your Outlook shortcuts?

You can try the /cleanviews and /resetfolders switches. Just type
outlook.exe /switchname in the Windows Run box.

Oops! I fesponded just a minute ago to a message that wasn't for me.
Sorry. Old age, you know...

Nope, no luck. I'll fool around with it some more. If anyone has any
other suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks again!
