Problem with Normal.dot

From time to time when opening Word, my machine locks up and requires
turning off the power before it will reboot. The only correction I have
found is to replace Normal.dot with a reserve copy which I keep in another
partition. Does anyone else have such a problem or does anyone have a
suggestion on how I might find the cause of the problem?

Thanks,

Jim

I've used the same device to good effect. However, your archive copy of
Normal.dot may itself have problems.

I have Windows XP Professional and Office 2003. I can go to "Add or remove
programs" in Control Panel and select Office 2003. I can then get to an
option to "repair" Office.

I don't know if this will fix any problems with Normal.dot.

You may have to start with a clean, bare version of Normal.dot.

That may not be too much of a waste of your customization of Normal.dot.
You can use Organizer to transfer all of the wonders of your (possibly)
defective archive copy of Normal.dot to your new blank slate version. That
may transfer the functionality of what you've done without the (alleged)
defects of the file.

mpt,

Thanks for responding. I hadn't thought of that possibility. I'll see if I
can find a way to get a fresh file and maybe add my additions one-by-one to
see if any of them are causing the problem.
