problem with Office 2000 Premium SP3 update

Jerry

A customer brought in their machine, complete with Office
2000 Premium, academic version and wanted us to download
all service packs over our high-speed internet
connection. SP1 seemed to go ok, but the update detection
advises that critical update SP3 needs to be installed.
It downloaded ok, installation started, but then it asks
for the Word 2000 SR-1 CD, which we of course don't have.
It will not accept the orginal disk 1 that contains
data1.msi. How do we get past this?

That's an early version of MS security. making sure you have the program
legally. There has always been a problem with sp3. Best solution is to go to
the catalog and download the entire sp3 and the run it. You may still be
asked for the disk but there is no way I know to bypass that.

I started down that road also. It extracts into 3 .msp
files. It looks like installing this requires some arcane
procedures. Doubleclicking on SP3CD2ff.msp launched an
installer, but the choices are repair, remove or add
components. Upgrade is not one of the choices. I did some
searching on the MS website but couldn't find a clear
explaination on how this is to be applied to a machine
that has SP1. It would be nice if MS fixed their problem,
but then we wouldn't be having this discussion :-o

Hey Jerry! This is not Microsoft.

If you require support for this issue, then you need to contact Microsoft
Product Support Services. This is a peer-to-peer forum that some MSFT
employees visit in their spare time, such as the ever helpful Eric Lawrence.

However, if you need immediate assistance, then contact them via their web
page:

Hi Jerry,

First check to see if the MS Installer on that Machine is
at v1.1 or later. That can cause one issue.

Next, when the dialog asking for a disk comes up check to
see what CD it's asking for at the bottom of that dialog in
the 'Use Feature From' box. If it's a separate MS Word CD
then it may be from a copy of MS Works Suite on the machine
(and there could be a separate Microsoft Word listing in
Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel).

CD#1 of all Office 2000 family products used the same generic
'data1.msi' file name although each had different content.

If it's asking for a CD for a specific Office edition then
that's the CD you'll need to use.

Has anyone figured out what the problem is with the
W2k/Office SR-3 update is? I've used the 'Update' system;
I've downloaded the 'Administrative' ('full') version and
the installation continues to fail (just quits).

Now it says it can't access 'WW9INTL.DLL', but the file is
in the ~Microsoft Office\Office\1033 folder and on the
Office (2k) installation disk1. Anybody have a suggestion?
