Problem with outgoing email using external SMTP. Need assistance.

Hello again,

We are testing Exchange 2003 and Windows Server 2003 with 2 clients at the
moment. An odd situation has arose and I wonder if you might be able to
point out where I am going wrong.

Each client has a local, exchange only account and corresponding internal
email address - as well as several external email addresses each. These
external email addresses have their own outgoing SMTP servers for sending
mail - configured on their own machines with Outlook 2003 build 5329. When
these users were on PST files, these accounts worked as you would expect.

However, there seems to be a problem now when attempting to send via the
external SMTP. For example, when sending an email to someone who uses a
normal ISP, such as sympatico.ca or Rogers.com or AOL, the mail goes as
expected. When sending the same message to someone in a larger corporation,
that corporation using an older version of MS Exchange, the mail does not
get delivered, NOR does it get bounced back to us an undeliverable. Where
is this mail going??

Oddly, if I send them mail using our internal exchange server account as the
default - they get the mail! How is this possible? I set the server up
with all default settings, yet it seems to be able to send outbound mail.
Unfortunately, when this mail is delivered to the recipient, the reply
address is the internal exchange server address and therefore they are not
able to simply press "reply" to respond, as the ".local" address is not
valid.

How many things have I done wrong here? Is this indeed a problem at my end?

Thanks in advance.
