Problem with Outlook opening

What is the maximum size of the mail box. I have users
who wouldn't delete their sent items for future reference
( they say ). Is there anything else I can do other than
forcing them to delete these items from their sent and
deleted items boxes( come what may?)

Are you talking about an Exchange mailbox or a .PST file? Exchange mailbox
limits are set by the server administrator; .PST files can be a maximum (and
I mean MAXIMUM) of 2GB in Outlook 2002 and earlier, though the limit is much
higher in Outlook 2003 -- theoretically 20GB or more if you're using the new
Unicode .PST format. In either case you could set up AutoArchive, or simply
educate your users to manually move their data to local .PST files on a
regular basis. In an Exchange environment, though, it's a much better idea
to give users a generous amount of mailbox space on the Exchange server as
the data is more secure there.
