problem with Outlook xp/2002 detecting duplicate contacts

I seem to be having a problem with Outlook xp/2002
detecting duplicate contacts. I have the latest SP's installed
and I have CHECK FOR DUPLICATES enabled, but it just
keeps on adding the contacts and not overwriting them.
PLEASE HELP.
