Problem with personal.xls

It appears that there is a problem with my personal macro
workbook. A while ago, I tried to record a macro to the
personal workbook and got the following message:

"Personal macro workbook in the startup folder must stay
open for recording."
"Unable to record."

And that was it.

Things that have been tried:
1) "Re-creating" it by naming a worksheet as personal.xls
and putting it in the startup folder.

2) Deleting the XLSTART folder along with the Personal.xls
file so it would be recreated. This time, when I started
Excel, I *was* able to record to the personal macro
workbook and then view it in the VBE.

I closed Excel and said Yes for "do you want to save
changes to the personal macro workbook".

When I open Excel and again, I am unable to see
personal.xls in the VBE and when tried to record to the
personal macro workbook again, I get the error messages I
stated above.

I can hide the the Personal.xls, and save it and
everything. But it doesn't show up in the VBE after
restarting Excel. I've even tried *not* hiding it before I
closed Excel. I still never see the thing again unless I
go into the XLSTART folder and manually open the file.

Also, there is nothing listed in the Alternate Startup
File location.

Any other ideas or am I just out of luck on this one?

Are you on a network? Is there more than one XLSTART folder on your machine? Do you have the
proper rights for this directory?

Sorry, guess I should have mentioned that.

There is a network here, but the Personal.xls isn't on it.
It's on this computer. There is more than one XLSTART
directory, but I know which one it's looking in by running
debug.Print(application.StartupPath) in the Immediate
window in the VBE.

As far as I know and can tell, I have full rights to the
directory. I've never had any problems working with any of
the folders on my own workstation, and the sharing tab for
the startup folder shows that it is not being shared.

Close XL and re-launch. Personal.xls should load okay each time you start
XL.

Well, the personal.xls file, when it works as it is supposed to, opens on
each session, but it is HIDDEN. To see it, you have to
Windows>Unhide>personal. Of course, you do not need to see the person file
to record a macro to it. Look at Windows>Unhide and see if personal is
listed.

I am aware of that. It should open as hidden when I start
Excel, but there is never anything under the Window\Unhide
menu, nor is it listed in the project explorer in VBE as
it used to be.

Hi Kristy,
Where are you running Excel from the network or from your
machine. If you are running Excel from the network perhaps
you had a legitimate entry in alternate startup directory
in Tools, options, General.

But first try recording a macro and tell the recorder to put it
in your personal.xls book, and if it doesn't see one it will
create it for you.
