problem with Powerpoint 2008 reading powerpoint 2004 files

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC

When I upgrade office 2004 to office 2008, I noted that all the symbols and formats were completely missing or mis-aligned on 2008. Is there a fix for this so I do not have to revise all my old powerpoint slides?
