Problem with Pub 97 - Win 98SE

I have Publisher 97 which I have used for years with a win 95 computer with
no problems. I retired the Win 95 machine and installed Pub 97 on a Win 98SE
machine. When Options are set to "Use Startup dialog box" the program opens
with the Page Wizard visible. Almost immediately a window opens labeled
Assert. The message in the window is, "File undialog.cpp Line 1396". There
are three buttons, Abort, Retry and Ignore. Pressing Abort brings up a
window which says, "Program Error, Closing current program, if problem
persists, contact vendor for this program." Pressing the only button (Close)
closes Pub 97. Pressing Retry causes a crash located in PUBDLG.DLL. Pressing
ignore causes the Assert window to close. However, about 2 seconds later it
reappears; this is repeatable. If I click cancel before the Assert window
reappears, the Page Wizard closes and the program acts normally except the
red margin on the page is sometimes gray. If I click on the Blank Page or
Existing Publication tabs before the Assert window reappears the problem
disappears. If I turn off "Use Startup dialog box" in Options the problem
doesn't appear unless I select "Create New Publication" from the file menu
where exactly the same events occur.

I have tried installing Pub 97 on another Win 98SE machine and the problem
does not happen on this machine. I suspected some possible file corruption
so I de-installed Pub 97 and re-installed it again. The same things occur.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here?

This issue appears here quite regularly (and in other places too), and the
only mention on the web of undialog.cpp is to do with an application called
ZoomText.

http://www.aisquared.com/Support/Z7Updates.htm has details - apparently,
upgrading or updating to version 7.01 fixes the issue.

Mary, thanks to you and Ed for replying to my message. I have never heard of
ZoomText before and am not using it. The 98 machine has never had 95 on it.
When I obtained the machine I replaced the hard disk and installed 98
directly from the original disks shipped with the machine.

I did have Works installed, specifically Works Suite 2000. I had Office 97
Pro installed on my 95 machine. When I retired it in favor of the 98 machine
I installed it on the 98 machine. The 98 machine came with disks for Works
Suite 2000. Since I had Office 97 Pro I only wanted to use Word 2000 from
the Works suite to have a later version of Word. I couldn't see a way to
install Word 2000 alone without Works (although there may actually be a way)
so I installed both but no other programs from the suite. I think the
problem with Pub 97 occured after that but cannot be sure since I use Pub 97
very infrequently. After I had the problem with Pub 97, I installed Home
Publishing 2000 to see what it was like.

I removed Home Publishing 2000. I was also able to remove Works while still
leaving Word 2000 installed. I removed and reinstalled Pub 97 but the same
problem was observed. In the Pub 97 directory I found a file named
readme.hlp that contained a list of the DLLs used in Pub 97. I looked in
\windows\system and saw that many of these DLLs had dates on them later than
1997 and so could not have been the originals from Pub 97. I renamed these
files with a .SAV extension, then removed and re-installed Pub 97 again. It
made no difference; the same problem was observed.

Office 97 was current until Office 2000 was released. There were at least 2
major service releases and people were using in with Win 98 for several
years. Pub 97 was superceded by Pub 98 and so was never current with Win 98.
I was able to obtain a copy of Win 98 very inexpensively. I will receive it
later this week and will try it out. Hopefully it will put this problem
behind me.

Incidentally, I did find another refernce on the web to this problem at
http://forums.pcw.co.uk/thread.jsp?forum=12&thread=34025 a Personal Computer
World forum from the UK. The same problem was observed with Pub 97 running
on Win XP. Unfortunately there is almost no discussion and no resolution
shown. The post is from this past July. I would have liked to send an e-mail
to the poster to enquire as to what he found out. However, you need to be a
forum member and the poster's e-mail was not given.

Mary, thanks for both your messages. Addressing the 2nd one 1st, I installed
Windows Installer Clean Up. When I run it only Microsoft Word 2000 SR-1
appears from the Works Suite. There is no mention of Works itself or any
other programs from the suite. This makes sense since I removed all except
Word 2000.

I finally found Clip Gallery in \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft
Shared\Artgalry. When I clicked on Cag.exe it opened up as CG 5.0. I didn't
know how to delete CG 5.0 and install CG 3.0. While I was contemplating this
I cleverly managed to erase the entire directory and could not recover it. I
decided to remove and re-install Pub 97 again so it would install CG 3.0. I
know it wasn't necessary to do this as I could have used Add/Remove to just
install Clip Art but I wanted a clean start. After re-installing Pub 97 I
tried to insert a clip. Clip Art wouldn't open; it gave a message that it
couldn't work with a later clip gallery. I pondered this for a while and
then tried to insert a clip into several of the office programs. all failed
with the same error message. However, when I tried Word 2000 it told me that
there was a problem with Clip Gallery and offered to repair it. At that
point this was an offer I couldn't refuse. It asked for the Word 2000 CD,
read from it then said it was doing something to enable old clip files to
be used. When the process was completed the \Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\Artgalry directory appeared to be restored to how it
was before I accidentally deleted it. After this when Insert Clip was tried
for any Office 97 program and Word 2000, CG 5.0 opened and I could inset a
clip. I could also use Insert Clip in Pub 97; CG 5.0 opened as in the other
applications. However, I could not view any of the clips from Pub 97 in any
of the applications, only the clips from CG 5.0. I followed the directions
in CG 5.0's help to import Pub 97's clip catalogs from the CD. It says it
has imported them and it says it has done something to get older clips to
work but they do not appear in the gallery. I don't know what to do about
this.

I agree that the problem is likely with CG. I think that Pub 97 may not be
compatible with CG 5.0. At this point I lean towards waiting until I get the
copy of Pub 98 I ordered. Maybe that will work with CG 5.0 and my problem
will disappear.

As far as troubleshooting CG from
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q162124, CG runs in
WordPad and in all the other applications but it is CG 5.0 that is running.
On the page it says, "If Clip Gallery starts from another program, Clip
Gallery is functioning properly. Your troubleshooting steps should now focus
on the client program (the program you are trying to use Clip Gallery with).
Please consult your documentation to troubleshoot the client program." I
guess this leaves me back where I started.

Mary, I can tell from your answer that I did not do a good job of
communicating in my last message. I am not having a problem running Clip
Gallery. Clip Gallery 5.0 runs properly in Pub 97, WordPad and all the other
applications I have that support Clip Gallery. However, in Pub 97 and all
the other applications the clips that are shown in the gallery appear to be
those from CG 5.0 that I think are stored in the directory, C:\Program
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Clipart and its sub-directories. The
clips from the Pub 97 CD that I believe are stored in the directory,
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Publisher\Clipart do not appear in the gallery. I
have tried to follow the instructions in the CG 5.0 help to import the clip
gallery catalogs Pub40_3.cag, Pub40_4.cag and Pub40_5.cag that are in the
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Publisher\Clipart directory and on the Pub 97 CD
but to no avail. These clip catalogs to not appear in CG 5.0. Do you have
any suggestions for me?

Mary, thanks for your suggestions. I thought I would wait until I had
installed Pub 98 before replying. Before installing Pub 98 I performed the
resolution in CG5: Standard Catalog for Clip Art May Be Unavailable in Clip
Gallery. I found that to get access to all the CG5 Clip Art I had to have
Works and Home Publishing 2000 installed in addition to Word 2000. Then all
the clips on the Works Suite 2000 CDs were available in CG5 in all my
applications. After I installed Pub 98 I tried Insert Clip. When CG5 opened
it came up with a message that it was incorporating clip catalogs from a
previous version and that it would take some time to complete. I had seen
this message previously with Pub 97, only it did not take a long time with
Pub 97 and the clip catalogs were never incorporated. However with Pub 98 it
did take long time and the Pub 98 clip catalogs appear to be incorporated in
CG5.

When I open Pub 98 the Catalog window opens and there are no problems
whichever tab is visible. The "File undialog.cpp Line 1396" problem I
observed with Pub 97 is gone.
