Problem with Quote Marks

N

Neil

Hello All,
I'm running Office 2000 on my P4 with Windows XP Home.
When using quote marks (either " or ') in any office
application (and in here too for that matter, so it may
be Windows-wide) nothing happens when I hit the quote
mark key. I have to hit the key twice for the quote mark
to appear. If the quote mark is followed by a vowel at
the beginning of the word an accent or umlaut (pardom my
spelling) will appear (eg á Ë). I used the same Office
disks on my now deceased laptop (which used Win 98) and
had the same problem. Any ideas on what's causing it and
how to fix it?
Cheers
Neil

Nowt wrong with your spelling of umlaut - your spelling of 'pardon'
however...<eg>. Have you checked to see that your keyboard is set-up
correctly and that you have Office set to use the correct language (this is
just a WSITD - I don't have a clue really!)

Also check your Country settings in Control Panel, M$
never have manged to get these working perfectly. Many
machines come with American settings lodged somewhere in
there. Make sure the Keyboard is set for your country...

Thanks to all for your help.
I took your advice re reconfiguring the country settings
and the keyboard. I had assumed that configuring Windows
XP to "English (Australia)" on setup would deal with
this. It turned out that there were a couple of other
places where the Country details needed to be entered,
including the Keyboard. That's something MS needs to deal
with. The setup for XP is still very US-centric.
Anyhow - problem solved thanks to your advice.
Many thanks
Neil
