Problem with reoccuring appointments

Server: E2k/SP3 on W2k/SP4
Clients: XP/SP1 w/Outlook2002
Some users have had issues when changing an existing
reoccuring appointment - they get "Cannot locate the
recurrence information for <x>" message.
Tried the following:
- ran /clean... switches
- recreated the appointment
- Upgraded some users to Outlook2003
Still have the issue once in a while; no help yet found in
Technet, Google, or newsgroups.
I assume this is some kind of sync issue (seems users that
report this are on laptops and they are config'd for off-
line).(?)
Any ideas from the MVP's?
