Problem with resources

E

Elle

Hi, hope you can help...

I need to add resources to the tasks

They are PMO, PM, PD, Dir etc. We don't have named resources yet.

I have 5 PMO, 3 PD, 2 Dir and 1 PM etc

The task is 17 days of work. 5 days for PM, 5 days for PD and 10 days for Dir

I tried entering: PM[100%];PD[300%];Dir[200%] representing how many of each
we have, but surely this assumes that everyone is working 100% for the time
on that task? which is not the case.

So...

I have another task which is 100 days of work. 5 for PM, 5 for PMO, 60 for
PD and 30 for Dir

I tried entering: PMO[5%];PM[5%];PD[60%];Dir[30%] and the duration came
out at nearly 2000 days!!!

AHHH how can I show this correctly?

I don't have Project at hand to test out what you are seeing. But what
I would suggest you try doing is change the setting for "Show Assignment
Units" to be decimal not percentage. It is just a setting, I think,
that controls the display. Project stores it ways only it and its
programmers know.

Also the Task Form below the Gant Chart where you can enter the
resources and their units and work line by line. I suspect you are
entering them on the task in Gant

Finally, another way to enter resources to a task is to double click on
the task and pick the resource tab.

There are even more ways, but I forget at the moment. I use the above.

I also wonder about your use of semi colon ";" rather than "," comma. M
y hunch would be that Project expects commas when deliminating resources
on the task line in the Gantt chart. Just a hunch.

Yes comma usually but not here in the Netherlands, it's all semi colons to
separate stuff.

Anyway...I'm not asking where to enter resources.

To simplify... 8 man days of work, 5 for 'PMO' - 1 for 'PM' - 2 for 'Other'

I have lots of 'Other' resource and 1 'PM'...so no problem BUT I only have 2
'PMO' for 5 man days of work

By my calculations the duration should come out as 2.5 days

But project has set the duration at 1.6 days? and said that pmo is over
allocated...

....but it wouldn't be over allocated if it said 2.5 days duration so why
doesn't it?

Dag Elle,

(Je had dit in het Nederlands kunnen vragen op
microsoft.public.nl.office.project)

I'm afraid you carefully avoid the solution.
Do not play with durations and percentages but use work.
You can enter work in one of two ways

Gantt Chart, Window menu, Split Window
Select your task in the Gantt Chart
Now below enter Work AND if necessary units.

OR

Task Usage view
make sure the two columns Work and assignment units are visible.
Enter what is necessary.

Groeten,
