For those about to troubleshoot, we salute you!
We are in the process of migrating Mac users to SMB shares and we've
run into a hitch with Excel for the Mac.
Server: Windows 2003 SP1 - yes permissions are o.k. <g>
OS of Mac Client: 10.3.9 or 10.4.6
Office Version: X or 2004
User A is on a Mac
User B is on a Mac or a PC
If User A opens file somefile.xls from the server via an SMB share and
then user B attempts to open the same file via SMB or AFP, user B will
get an error (typically it's along the lines of "'somefile.xls' can't
be accessed") and the user cannot open the file.
If User A opens the file via AFP or if User A is on a PC then User B
has no problems - they get read only.
If the Excel file is marked as a Shared Workbook via Tools:Share
Workbook... then there is no problem either way, except that it can now
be modified by multiple users and we really can't have that in our
workflow.
Finally, If two trains are traveling to Chicago and the first train is
going 5 mph how long..... ;-)
Any thoughts. It smells like improper file locking by Excel depending
on if it's open via SMB/AFP (different lock parameters?) and also if
it's a shared workbook or not (it would have to have different lock
perameters for Sharing to work...)
BTW: Dave from Thursby didn't help either.
Many thanks for your time.
Jeff
