Problem with some office files

First time here...I have a user running MS Office2k. This user open up a
file today to find a lot of the following mess..."ßÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ?ßÿëÿþÿÿÿ".
She then continued to attempt to open others to find that some of her files
in some folders were similar and some files were fine. She noticed that the
Date Modified on all of the files that were screwed up appear to be similar
(10-8-2003). Any idea what may have happened here? It's a Windows 98 PC.
I ran scandisk and it found no hard drive errors. Thanks very much for any
insight.
