Problem with Spell Check in Spanish

T

teacher27

Hi,
I selected the language of my entire document as Spanish. When I do a
spell check, it works fine for a while, but then after a while the word
in the "suggestions" box stops changing, even as the spell-checker
moves on to a different word in the "not in dictionary" box above. I've
only noticed this when doing spell-check in Spanish. Any ideas or
suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

What version of Word?
How long is your document?
Did you click Change All at some point while spellchecking?

And? ....

(If you can provide the other information Daiya asked for too, she can help
you. People such as me also watch posts such as yours to see if we can help
as well. With your particular problem there may be complications, and
providing what's asked for is a good first step.) ;-)

teacher27,

Welcome to the club...

:-(

As far as I understand, there is a serious bug in Word 2004 for Mac OS
X when dealing with the Spanish custom dictionary.

As I have reported in this place many times since May 2004 (almost a
year ago and still unfixed!!!):

1 - Spanish custom dictionary unavailable.
2 - Contents of custom dictionaries (Spanish, English, etc) are erased
when changing the language of the custom dictionaries in the
Preferences. I have lost precious data that way.

Hopefully Microsoft will fix this bug with the next update of Word 2004
for Mac OS X 10.3.8 or later.

Note: no problem with previous versions of Word for Mac.

3.- frecuently the program crashes when trying to introduce a new word
into the custom dictionary using the contextual menu.

(the lenguage of the custom dictionary has to be set to none; otherwise
occurs error 1.)

I *knew* you were gonna mention the Spanish custom dictionary problem.

I really don't think the Spanish custom dictionary problem is related to
teacher27's problem. Note he/she says *nothing* re Add being greyed out, nor
anything about an error message "can't find dictionary." In fact, assuming I
have understood the description properly, this sounds very similar to a
problem reported (without reference to Spanish) when selecting Change All
while spellchecking very long documents.

Hi,

Sorry... Here's the rest of the info:

Yes, it was a very long document, and yes, I did click "Change All"
repeatedly while spellchecking.

Thanks!

Hi,

Sorry about the lack of info.

It is a very long document (about 30 pages), and yes, I did click
"Change All" many times during the spell check.

Thanks!

Hmm. 30 pages. I wasn't seeing this on a 25-page doc (US English), but was
for 100-pages and over, though it showed up intermittently.

I think the problem, just fyi, is that they changed the way the screen is
drawn in Word 2004 and the dialog doesn't refresh properly. Sadly, previous
discussion didn't arrive at a solution. I was occasionally able to force
the suggestions to update by clicking in the dialog where they should be,
but I had to click line by line and it was very annoying. Also, I think if
you avoid clicking Change All it might not happen (also very annoying,
though some judicious Find & Replaces could speed it up a little).

What exact version of Office are you using? I made earlier tests before the
11.1.1 update and maybe before the 11.1 update.

If you wouldn't mind sending me your doc--if it is not confidential--I would
like to play with it and see if the Spanish makes a difference in how long
this bug takes to show up. Use my first name at mvps.org.

Try using the Normal view instead of the Page Layout view (if that is
indeed the view you were using). In my case, it very often does wonders.
Word then has a lot less to worry about as far as redrawing is concerned
and most such task go on a lot faster.

No, it's only the suggestions box inside the spellcheck dialog that doesn't
refresh properly. And I always use Normal view, anyhow, and I saw this,
though using Page Layout could be why teacher27 is seeing it on shorter
documents than I did. I think it's similar to the cross-reference bug,
myself. Here's the previous discussion, which explained it in more detail,
after my initial confusion.

fixed in a future update :))

Thanks for the help.

Daiya, I am using Office version 11.1. And unfortunately, the document
I was working on is confidential-- a transcript of an interview I did
for some research.

Thanks again everyone,

Some time ago sombody told us here that the problem has been solved by
the develpment team of the spell checker. Nevertheless, it seems that
the corrected version is not available yet for download.

Can I hope that it will be availabe soon? Or is there some possibility
to download or solve it, that I haven't seen.

*Presumably* it would be rolled into the Office 2004 update that has been
promised for the "second half of this year". No details on exact timing or
features have been released, so far as I know.
