First thing I would do would be to press the "Test Connection" button
in Project Professional. You get to it by going to Tools > Enterprise
Options > Microsoft Office Project Server Accounts. Select the account
and then press the Properties button. If one thing is off here, then
the connection will fail. For example, the URL should be in the form
of http://servername/.... Notice how I am using forward slashes. If
you type in back slashes "\" it won't work.

If the connection succeeds, then I would check security options in
Internet Explorer. In IE go to Tools > Internet Options. Select the
Security tab then select the Trusted Sites icon. Now press the Sites
button. Do you have your Project Server site listed here?

Not positive on this, but I believe the address you put in IE (Trusted
Sites) needs to be the same as what you used for the connection string
in Project Professional except for the /projectserver at the end of the
URL. For example, you might have
http://servername.xyz.com/projectserver in the URL box in Project
Professional, so in IE you would have to have
http://servername.xyz.com. If you have just http://servername (notice
how it is not fully qualified) then you might have issues.

Hope this helps,

Victor
