Problem with TOC for multiple documents

I have a large document, split into chapters and each chapter is its own Word
file (Word 2003). I have created my TOC also in a separate file by placing
all my files in the same folder, using the automatic TOC feature of Word, and
using the Reference Document (RD) field code. It works except that the
entries in my TOC are always just text. They are not links. I have the option
to use Ctrl + Click enabled but I get nothing when I hover over the TOC. It
doesn't matter which view of the document I select.

I have tried building it with "Use Hyperlinks instead of page numbers"
selected and with the same option cleared. The results are the same. Just
text. My TOC is based on the built-in style headings.

I have no problems when I create a TOC in the same Word file as the content.
I can Ctrl + click to navigate to the specific area. The situation only
occurs when I'm trying to create a TOC to span multiple documents outside of
the TOC doc. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I understand that RD fields resutls are not generated automatcially as
hyperlinks.
I gave up sometime ago trying to get this working. Someone suggested
changing to an Index field instead, but I found it easier to either use the
IncludeText field (bit of a fiddle) or create one large document (which
obviously works perfectly)

Tables of contents built via RD fields are never hyperlinked, unfortunately.
Is there a chance you could use INCLUDETEXT fields instead (see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/tblsfldsfms/includetextfieldscontent.htm)? If not,
see if someone in microsoft.public.word.vba.general has a better idea.

hyperlinked because that would be the easiest solution. Unfortunately, the
documents are too large and too complex to make using Includetext fields
feasible.

Word isn't really the best tool to use for these particular documents but,
unfortuantely, that is what was used to create them the first time around and
I'm forced to maintain it. Whoever created these docs the first time has a
working TOC and a working Index (in separate docs, with links and proper
formatting). I can't figure out how they did it. Every option seems to be
very labor intensive. :-(

Probably an add-in of some sort was used.

I noticed that you have posted the question in a Word VBA group; someone
there can probably suggest something. I'll certainly pay attention to any
replies in that thread.
