Problem with watermarks - Word 2003

We have created a customized letter, memo and fax cover page which uses
tables for formatting fields.

When I click Format > Background > Printed Watermark > Text Watermark > OK,
I expect to see the ASAP watermark in the document.

Instead, the table cells are shaded black and the watermark is partially
hidden.

If I print preview and return to the document, the shading disappears and
the watermark is displayed as expected.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
