problem with Word 2002 footnotes

My footnotes have disappeared from the bottom of each page, and resist any
attempt to get them to display themselves.. they appear (greyed out) in the
print preview page, and print fine, but resist appearing on the page
onscreen... I have tried the convert to endnotes, and back to footnotes, I
have tried the `select bottom of page' and `whole document' options in the
`footnote & endnote- drop-down menu, nothing seems to work... I have also
restored defaults... any clues towards solution of this nagging problem will
be greatly appreciated...

Are you looking at the "Print Layout" view? Check the View menu, maybe
you're in "Normal" which would not show page headers and footers.
