Problem wth removing/reinstalling Office 2004

I used the uninstall feature to remove Office 2004, I reinstalled it using
the cd (student version) on a iBook G4 (purchased in 2005 new), and I am not
able to update it and get the entourage to open my saved files. Between
getting a message that the installer could not locate the correct version of
the software and the identity cannot be opened with this version of
Entourage, I am very confused. Should I have put the office 2004 program
from the applications folder and put in the trash after using the uninstall
feature? Thanks so much.

"This Identity Cannot Be Opened With This Version of Entourage"
This message usually means, for example, that Entourage is at 11.0, but the
saved database was saved in a more updated version. Since there was a
database format change in there, Entourage 11.0 cannot open a database
saved in later version.

Microsoft does not update each application every time an update is released.
See ³Confused over Microsoft Update Version numbers?³ for a handy script
that gives you the Office application¹s version info.

What happens when you run the updater for Office 2004? Is it possible you
have the wrong updater? You need 11.5.0 combo updater.

Thanks for your quick response. I tried the combo updater and am still
getting that message. I am running version 11.0.0. Does each update after
that version need to be put in?

You can just use the 11.5 combo updater. It includes all previous updaters.

What does Entourage version say under About Entourage? If you are still at
11.0.0, your Identity will not open until you are updated.

You can also apply the Apple combo updater. That will often fix odd problems
with Office installs.

You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

When I did try the updates, various ones, it said it couldn't find it and
then when I would open excel or word, I would get an error message that the
Microsoft Framework Library could not be found. I am afraid this is going to
happen again. Is there a fix for that?

Also, I am fairly new to Macs, how do I find out if I have Intel or PPC so I
can get the right update?

thanks.

See this page for help with updating errors.

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/error/install_update.html#fails1>

I suspect if you follow the steps listed for "fix when you have modified
files" will get you installed correctly. In step 3, there is a link that
takes you to a page with detailed instructions and pictures to get you
installed. Be sure you do not have any Office applications open when running
the updater. A recent Apple update is causing an install script to error out
if you have open Microsoft applications.

A framework error normally means one or more components of Office have not
been updated correctly and are now out of synch with other bits. Re-apply
recent Office updates.

Also, I am fairly new to Macs, how do I find out if I have Intel or PPC so I
can get the right update?

If your computer is fairly new, it's most likely an Intel.

Under the Apple in the menu bar, select "About this Mac". A window will pop
up telling your the version of the OS you have installed. It also gives you
the Processor type. PPC or Intel. If you click on the "More Info..."
button it gives you even more info about your Mac.

Cheers and Welcome to Mac! I have a few tips and links posted to help new
users here:

Really scratching my head on this one! I got the apple update to work but
still no go on the office 2004 updates. I have tried going back to 11.2.0 (I
have 11.0.0) and still getting the message that it can't be found. The link
you had given me was for 2008, and I am running 2004. I don't know if there
is a difference. I am new to macs, but the one I am working on is my
daughter's which we bought in may 2005. I found a log on the computer,
apparently placed there by the tech who did the installs before shipping the
laptop to us, and I am trying to get to this update but don't know where to
get it. It reads:
AUOffice2004111EN
Type of Install: Easy Install

Check this page for the updates to Office 2004. The 11.3.5 updater contains
the fix for the Identity upgrade issue. You can try just upgrading to this.

The AUOffice2004111EN sounds like an early upgrade that is probably no
longer available. It could also be for the AutoUpdate application and not
Office.

BTW, why did your use "Remove Office" in the first place? I'm suspecting
that you have underlying system problems that could have resulted in Office
problems. The Combo will often fix these, but if the problems are wide
spread it takes an "Archive & Install." A lot of people are scared of doing
an "Archive & Install" but it really is not hard and the last time I did it
I only had to re-install my Microsoft keyboard software.

"Archive and Install" moves existing system files to a folder named Previous
System and then installs Mac OS X again.

Just be sure to check Preserve Users and Network Settings when you select
Archive & Install.

Archive and Install

1) Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc and double-click the Install Mac OS X
icon.

2) Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select the
destination disk, select your current Mac OS X disk (in most cases, it will
be the only one available).

3) Click Options. If you want to save your existing files, users, and
network settings, select ³Archive and Install,² and then select ³Preserve
Users and Network Settings.² If you want to erase everything on your
computer and reinstall Mac OS X, select ³Erase and Install.² You can¹t
recover erased data.

4) Click Continue.

5) Click Customize to select which parts of Mac OS X you¹d like to install,
or click Install to perform a basic installation (recommended).

Once the install has finished, your system will be at whatever level the
disk you have is. So if your Install DVD/CD disk is 10.5.0, that's what
version of OS will be on your Mac. You will need to download the appropriate
Combo Updater from Apple's site to restore the system to a higher version.
After you run the combo, allow Software Update to download and install any
additional updates.

I have had the same problem with Office Entourage 2008 and used the combo
installler and have the same issue. It still produces the version error.
