Problems adding hyperlinks to forms

Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is something I should post here or in the General
questions section. I would have cross-posted using the "advanced options" but
I'm not sure what to enter for "full USENET designation.

Anyway, I just stumbled across something that’s created a problem for me and
I’m not sure the best way around it.

I’ve set up my database so users have virtually no access to MS-Access
menus. In Tools/Startup everything was un-checked.

The other day I was testing that my Full-data users could add a hyperlink in
one of the fields on a form. My User Manual explains that to create the
hyperlink they are to right-click on the field, select Hyperlink/Edit
Hyperlink, then go ahead and browse to the applicable file they were
hyperlinking to. Imagine my surprise when nothing happen when I
right-clicked. I hadn’t noticed this earlier because I was in the habit of
holding the shift key when I logged in so I had full menu access.

I played around with Tools/Startup a little more and found that I had to
ensure “Allow Default Shortcut Menus†was checked. However, instead of seeing
all the hyperlink options (edit / open / open in new window / copy / remove /
display text / add to favourites), I only see ‘display text’ and ‘add to
favourites.’

What do I have to change to allow all the options to be available? Or is
this even possible?

By the way, with only “Allow Default Shortcut Menus†checked, I find that if
I place the cursor in the field and hit Ctl-k then I’m able to add hyperlink.
I’ll used this as a last resort but I would prefer to have Access set
appropriately.

Thanks in advance!

Look at your startup settings. Do you have (default) listed as the shortcut
menu bar or is it a custom menu bar?

It is default.

Look at the form's properties. Is shortcut menu set on yes and shortcut menu
bar set on a name or is it blank?

Yes, the shortcut menu is set to yes. The shortcut menu bar is blank and
there is nothing available to select from the drop-down box.

You should have the full shortcut menu with all those settings. What version
of Access are you using and which service pack are you on? Which version of
Windows and service pack?

I'm using Access 2003 with SP3 (and the hotfix to fix the drop-down box
issue) and Windows XP Professional version 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp.080413-2111:
SP3).

I don't have access to a pc with that configuration today, it may be a few
days before I can check. The shortcut menu items you listed earlier are a
little different than earlier service packs on Access 2003. It sounds like a
custom menu, but I'll check what's supposed to be on there for you.

As an alternative to waiting you could repost your question in the general
Access discussion group and see if others have some suggestions.

Hi Chris,

I may cross-post later today. I'll see how my day goes.

Further to my other issue, with Superusers having some problems ...
something just occurred to me. I created the database using Access2000 then
converted it to 2002-2003. I am using the WIF that was created in A2000.
Could this be an issue?

(FWIW, I tried my NewData users (no one is assigned to the group at the
moment) and they can't even access the database. Error says they don't have
read permission on "Switchboard" - not true!)

Thanks!

Since 'Switchboard' is a form, there is no such permission as 'read' on a
form. Please clarify.

The version of the WIF shouldn't matter. Later versions can use a mdw
created in a previous version just fine.

Hi,

My bad...I should have said "Switchboard Items". The exact error was
"Record(s) cannot be read; no read permission on "Switchboard Items."

Similar to my issue with the Superusers group, when hold down the shift key
while logging in as NewData user I can enter the database. When I try to open
the Switchboard Items table I get the error "Could not read definition; no
definitions permissions for table or query "Switchboard Items," which doesn't
surprise considering the issues I've been having.

Thanks for trying to make sense of this. :)

You can use a workgroup file from earlier versions, no prob.

Joan Wild is already addressing your other concern so I'll bow out of that.
