Problems after Installing XP SP2

B

Bruce Wilson

I have Office XP Professional on my computer updated to
the 2002 versions. I went to install SP3 for Office XP
and I get an error saying the installer is looking for a
file on a removable disc. The Office XP CD is in the
drive. The file that can not be found is PRO.msi. I can
not install the SP3 update.

Also every time I start PowerPoint now Office XP tries to
install something and also keeps looking for PRO.msi.

Any ideas how to get around this problem?

Hi, Bruce,

Does your CD contain pro.msi? Did your system come pre-installed?

There was more than one product SKU for Office XP Professional. ProRet.msi
is the Retail product, Pro.MSI is the volume license one. The CD you
received should have matched, but some PC suppliers use images of a hard
drive and goof.

One method in a mismatch is to backup your files, uninstall Office XP,
restart the PC and install from the CD you have.

For setup questions on non-OEM MS Office products you can contact MS
directly for assistance through the phone numbers at
http://support.microsoft.com If it's Office that came with a PC
then direct support comes from the PC supplier.

Hello? Microsoft? Anybody there? You have many, many frustrated customers
here explaining a common problem. I probably get an "Update Now" window
nearly two times a week (who knows what most of these updates are) and now
that there is a real problem, I wonder how long it is going to take you to
fix it. Obviously this is a widespread problem, and we don't all sit in
front of our computers with the Windows XP disk in hand (although sometimes
it seems like we should).

This is not only a home problem, I work here in a laboratory at the
University of Pennsylvania. Our entire team is suffering from not being able
to use Office. I wish there was another choice instead of this terrible
monopoly.
