problems between OL and exchange

I had to reinstall my office 2000 recently (in Win XP
Pro), and I probably did something wrong that I cannot
fix. Every time I open Outlook, I get a message
saying "Network problems are preventing connection to the
Microsoft Exchange Server computer. Contact your system
administrator... In XP, I put a name in Administrator, but
I am not aware that I have a network.

I hit, ok, no other option. Then it says "the action
couldn't be completed.

How can I get rid of this Microsoft Exchange Server stuff ?
What did I do wrong ?

Thanks a lot for your help.

If you are not on a network, chances are you don't have an Exchange server
to connect to. Try reconfiguring the mail support in Outlook 2000 by
selecting Tools\Options, then on the 'Mail Services' tab click 'Reconfigure
Mail Support...'. Here you can tell Outlook what kind of email system you
are connecting to.

Thanks for your answer. However, the problem is I CANNOT
open OL. I am totally blocked. What else can I do ?
Maybe I said somewhere by mistake that I had a server.
I even tried to reinstall completely Office 2000, I have
the same problem.
Thanks...

Try opening the 'Mail' applet in control panel & deleting your mail profile
there. Click on 'Show Profiles' & then remove the profile you are using. Add
a new one, but this time use the 'Internet E-mail' service. You will need to
know the names of your SMTP & POP servers.
