Problems converting 97 doc to 2003 with graphics & textboxes

I have several documents I originally created in Word97. They all contain a
scanned .jpg image of a floor plan that is placed on the page. On top of this
picture are many text boxes and graphic images (arrows, etc). Now that I've
upgraded to 2003, I'm having trouble making changes to these documents. When
I first open one, everything is OK. But if I scroll down, the floor plan part
disappears. I have to click on the Print icon to restore it, or go through
the Drawing menu and bring it to the front (which may in turn cause it to
cover up something else that was already in front of the floor plan). Any new
graphic or textbox that I add absolutely will NOT come to the front of the
drawing no matter what I do. So now I've got objects floating around behind
the floor plan. Also, if I zoom in to see better, when I click on something
the page shifts over to the far left and I can't see what I need to work on.
If I try to scroll over to it again, then the background image has
disappeared again. I'm getting very frustrated with this and really do NOT
want to have to recreate all 42 documents in 2003. Can anyone shed some light
on what I need to do to make these work properly?

Hi D.,

The disappearing picture when scrolling can be an issue
with the graphics card or graphics card chipset drivers
needing an update. If you right click on the desktop
and from properties turn down the graphics card acceleration
2 clicks and then start Word do you get the same problem?
