Problems deleting highlighted text

All of a sudden today I have had a problem deleting highlighted text
with the delete button on the keyboard.

It doesn't seem to matter whether I highlight the text with the mouse
and left button or with shift and arrow keys.

Either way when I press delete nothing happens.

I can delete individual letters one at a time but not if I highlight
them first.

Any ideas?

When you press the Delete key, look at the status bar at the bottom of
the Word window. Does it say "Delete Block? No (Yes)" ?

If so, then in Tools > Options > General, uncheck both options that
mention WordPerfect.

hi,

i had a similar problem (selecting text and keyboard buttons wouldnt delet
or change it) (but nothing came up in the status bar so the unchecking
wordperfect -as suggested for you didnt work but it helped me find a cure for
me) so in case you had the same problem as me go to:

tools>options>edit and check the first box down 'typing replaces selection'.

Yours is a different problem, involving Backspace rather than Delete. Word
considers backspacing "typing." Both are covered in
