Hello guys,
I recorded a couple of macros in PERSONAL.XLS from a long time already,
some of which are activated by buttons and some by keyboard shortcuts.
I'm working on Excel 2003 SP1.
From a couple of days to now, suddenly I found strange that the keyboard
shortcuts would not work anymore. Soon I also was horrified to see that all
the fancy-looking buttons I made also disappeared from the toolbars. I
tried to run the Personal.XLS macros directly and found out that there WERE
NO macros because there was no PERSONAL.XLS anymore!!! That is, the file
was there, just Excel did not "see" it.
I fortunately had made some backups of files Excel11.xlb and PERSONAL.XLS
and restored them, but the result was the same. I even deleted all files
under C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel so
that Excel could recreate fresh new startup files, then created some macros
on PERSONAL.XLS, ok. Then exited excel... and then upon new entering, the
macros just created were not accessible anymore nor the keyboard shortcuts
I'd just created.
It was when I started to write this article I stumbled with the reason. I
needed to specify here what was my Excel version and so I entered Excel and
went to Help\About MS Office Excel; There, I noticed, below the expected
"OK" button, three buttons, for "System Info", "Tech Support" and "Disabled
Items". I clicked this last button only to see that there was my
Personal.xls file. It was for some reason disabled. All I had to do was to
enable it again and exit excel. Starting Excel again, all macros, keyboard
shortcuts and macro buttons were back.
So be careful before noticing some functionality on Excel is not working.
It may well be just disabled.
Take care,
Cackos
