Problems importing an MPX file

Wantok

When importing a project from an MPX file created by another application, the Project Start Date is set equal to the earliest tasks start date. This is OK, but then each task is given the same start date, even though individual start dates are supplied via the MPX file.

Does anyone know of a way to prevent this from happening ie to allow the dates in the MPX file to be assigned to each task.

This used to be the case in MS-Project 98, but since Project 2000 the above seems to be the case.

Project appears to take the view that the imported tasks are "New" and therefore assigns a constraint of ASAP and Schedule From Start Date.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Try getting a copy of Project 98 and saving a .mpx file. Then import it to
Project 2000 and see what happens. I suspect the application that has
exported the .mpx file hasn't done it very cleverly.

NOTE. mpx file formats are not supported any longer. Project 2002 and 2003
use xml files for text file communication. The xml files are also much more
complete and accurate in data representation than .mpx files. If you intend
upgrading any time soon, then conversion to xml is essential.

Hello Wantok,
What is the "other application" which created the mpx file ?
When the mpx file is well structured, the importation in Project doesn't
pose any problem.
Check what is the list separator in the original application : if it's
different from ";" you may encounter some difficulties.
Same thing for the time separator if it's different from the "/"
Nb: you can edit the mpx file in the NotePad of Windows.
