Problems importing dates from Excel

I am having problems importing dates from an excel spreadsheet.

I am saving the spreadsheet as a webpage and importing html so I get the
formatting of each cell.

The date cell is set to display m/yy but when someone entered data into it,
some of the fields have a number rather than a date. If I try to turn the
cell format to text, then those fields that have a date turn into a 5 digit
number and those entered as a number stay (ie, 01/02)

When you have mixed data/format such as this, is there a way to import it
into Access?

I am using Access and Excel 2003
