Problems inserting symbol

In Word 2003, starting today when I open the "insert symbol" dialog and try
to select a symbol, I can't get any of them to highlight. If I try to insert
the default highlighted symbol, nothing happens. I am able to select and
display the different fonts, and close the dialog, but otherwise the dialog
is frozen. I'm also having the "save changes to normal.dot" problem,
although I'm not running any add-ins. I tried renaming normal.dot and making
Word create a new normal.dot template, but it didn't solve the problem.

If you can click on Insert | Symbol, and see the symbols, but
cannot select one, it's usually because the x-mouse feature in
TweakUI is enabled.

d'oh...
That was it. Thank you so much! That x-mouse feature is annoying
sometimes, but for some reason I really miss it when I try to do without it.

Thank you so much for your help.

I think my "save normal.dot" problem is due to my going into the task
manager and ending the winword.exe process that hangs on after I exit Word.
I really notice the improvement with it ended, but it causes more problems
than it's worth, I guess.

Thanks again! Linda
