Problems Installing Office '04.

M

So, I just bought Office for Mac Student version recently. All cool.
Come home, and TRY to install it. Can't.
Due to unknown reasons to me.
This is what happens:

I launch the CD, and click on the "Office Setup Assistant" it shows in
the dock, and bounces like 5-6 times, then, it goes away. Puff, gone,
sayonara, adios, goodbye.

First time, I was like "uh, odd" and went on with installing the
folder directly to my Apps. I waited while it was copying. Fine...
All was done. I went and double-clicked the Word icon... It appeared
on the dock, bounced for like 3 seconds, and then, gone.

The same happens with each app in the folder.

I came here, looking for answers, and did 2 of them:

The Apple Combo. And the "Clean Install" method. I don't know what
else to do. And I'm in great need of Office. Would like some help.

If any questions, I'll be checking this forum regularly.

Thanks.

Did you ever run "Ruin my Microsoft Experience and Most of My Mac",
sometimes known as the Office Test Drive?

If yes, then you have to fumigate your Mac.

Read /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Additional Tools/Remove
Office/Remove Office Read Me.html

and follow the directions there.

You don't mention your OS version and update level, so you have made the
question impossible to answer :)

However, I would run the Remove Office tool TWICE, then re-install using
drag-and-drop. Then apply the three latest updates to MS Office from the MS
Website.

You should be good to go after that.

Did you previously have Office test run installed, and did you run the
updates after the initial install?

@John McGhie

You're right, I forgot to mention the OS and all that material....

Tiger, 10.4.10 I can say, and you can be sure that I'm as up to date
as humanly possible.
I ran the Remove Tool twice, as you said. Re-installed it by
dragging, and nothing. It just bounced, and disappeared.

@Elliott Roper:

Interesting article dug down there at "Read /Applications/Microsoft
Office 2004/Additional Tools/Remove
Office/Remove Office Read Me.html" but of no help, since, I did what
it told me to and, nothing.

@Brian Bulmer: Yup, I had the test, the Mac came with it. Yes, I ran
the updates, from 3.5 - 3.7
And, nothing's working.

This is greatly frustrating. :p

MS....*Sigh*

Well, the news you don't want to hear is that it works faultlessly for most
folks :)

When you say you are up-to-date, I take it that you applied Microsoft Office
updates 11.3.5, 11.3.6 and 11.3.7 AFTER you installed? Just checking... It
won't go without at least 11.3.5.

When this turns ugly, applying the Apple Combo updater can work wonders, as
can forcing a rebinding afterwards. As can re-applying the latest QuickTime
update. And sometimes running a Disk Utility "Repair Disk Permissions".

When nothing works, Diane recommends an Archive and re-install of the entire
system. Basically, the QuickTime update was the root cause. It tends to
pooch the entire system if it doesn't apply correctly.

I'm having the exact same issue. Even after a clean install, repairing
permissions, erasing free space on the disk, checking ownership of
related files, etc. etc, i get one "bounce" in the dock and then...
nothing. Running 10.4.10, lates version of Quicktime from Software
Update, etc etc.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No no no no (as my 2 year old grandson would tell me) If you have an
Intel Mac, Software Update is what *causes* the problem. You must
download the 10.4.10 *Combo* updater from Apple's site and perform the
update using it.
If your Word still misbehaves, perform the prebinding operation
mentioned in the Apple knowledge base article, and try Word again.

I think it is safe to update to Quicktime 7.2 without bringing the
problem back on. (As in ‹ just for a laugh, even though I was having no
problems ‹ I went through the whole dance above on my Mac Pro without
any bits falling off)
