Problems installing Office 2007 Ultimate

P

Phil

I tried installing Office 2007 Ultimate on a computer that meets the
specifications and has Office Professional 2003 on it. I choose the option
to uninstall the previous version. After running for a while it came up with
the 1714 error that I have seen in other discussions and 'backed out the
changes'. I can still get into Excel and Word etc. but when I try to bring
up Outlook I get the error MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the wrong version. I
followed the instructions from another message to rename the MSMAPI32.DLL
file and then it was supposed to fix it and that didn't work either. I found
a copy of the log file of the install but I figure it's too large to include
in this post. I also have tried uninstalling Office 2003 but it came up with
an error that the installation source is not available. Can someone please
help me.

You might try using Windows Restore to get back to the point prior to
your install attempt.

Go to Windows Help and search for RESTORE to learn more.

Good luck...

The error you are seeing when you try to uninstall Office 2003 suggests
that the problem is corruption with the Office 2003 Local Installation
Source (ie, the \MSOCache folder). I suggest trying the LISTool utility to
try to repair the Local Installation Source. You can download the tool
from the Microsoft Download Center at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=10fa7aa3-695b-42c3-
9045-b812ba0fed3e&DisplayLang=en. You will find content on how to use the
LISTool at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ork2003/HA011402361033.aspx.
You will want to first use the tool to remove the LIS, and then use the
Enable option to recreate the LIS. Then you should be able uninstall
Office 2003. The Office 2003 Setup failure is likely the cause of the
error in Office 2007 Setup as Office 2007 Setup uses the Office 2003 Setup
to perform the removal during the upgrade.

If the LISTool fails for some reason, a log file is generated in the %temp%
directory. It will be helpful in diagnosing the problem further.

The list tool did not work because I had tried some of the other posts with
trying to manually uninstall office 2003. Is there a tool that will clean up
office 2003 install without the list? or do you have any other ideas?

I may have spoken too soon. Perhaps the list tool cleaned enough of it up
that made the 2007 install believe that it wasn't on the system, even though
many of the files were still there. I was able to successfully install
Office 2007 with Spysweeper and Norton turned off. I think the bottom line
problem was with 2003 being there without the list for uninstalling and also
not turning off spyware and anti-virus programs.

Thanks for your help!!!!
