Problems installing Office XP

K

Kas

I have recently purchased a new PC. It came preinstalled with Microsoft
Office – 60 day Trial. I already have a copy of Microsoft Office XP
professional and therefore don’t need the trial.

At this time I have not requested an activation code for the trial system,
I simply tried to install Office using my existing CD. I thought to avoid
any confusion I would install it in a different directory, and, for safety, I
also created a restore before I did it.

The installation seemed to work ok. After it completed I accessed Excel
which worked ok, but when I tried to access Word the PC hung up. I had to
switch off and on to get out of it. I tried several times with the same
result. I then reverted back to my restore point.

That’s the situation I’m in at this time. It seems that I need to
uninstall the Trial system first and then install the Office XP Professional
from the CD I have. I went into Add and Remove programs in the Control
panel. There is no specific item for the Trial System, but there is an Item
2007 Microsoft Office System. If I removed this would it solve this problem?
or maybe I need to activated the trial system to get the opportunity to
uninstall it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many thanks for your reply. I uninstalled the 2007 Office system using the
add/Remove feature in the Control Panel. I was quite hopeful with this
because it took a while and seemed to be doing a lot of work, but,
unfortunately, when I reinstalled Office XP I got the same result.

When I try initially to activate Excel and Powerpoint I get the message
‘Office application version does not match’ but if I ignore this they
activate ok and thereafter they activate without the message appearing.
However in the case of Word, the first time it hangs up and I have to switch
off and on to get back in. The next time I try to activate I get the
following option.

‘Word failed to start correctly last time. Starting Word in Safe Mode will
help you correct or isolate a start up problem in order to successfully start
the program again. Some functionality may be disabled in this mode.’ - I
took the option but didn’t know what to do when I got in.

So I’m back to square one.

Once again any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Kas

Did you read the knowledge base article in the link I posted? I would also
recommend uninstalling all versions of Office then reinstalling the one you
want to use.

Many thanks - I did indeed read the knowledge base article. It defines a
rather lengthy procedure that I saw as a last resort, but it now seems that I
am at the last resort, so I plan to tackle it tomorrow.

Many thanks again
