Problems opening Office documents from Explorer

R

Risa

I have recently installed Microsoft Office XP on my
computer. I am able to open the programs from my Start
Menu but whenever I click an Office file from my Explorer
I recieve the following message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for
performing this action. Create an association in the
Folder Options control panel".

I have done this repeatedly but still, I recieve the same
message and none of my Office programs will open from
Explorer/ My Computer/ My Doucments. There are no viruses
on my hard drive and no defragementation issues present.
Does anyone know how to rectify this problem?

Hi Risa,

You might try re-registering the applications to recreate the file
associations various Registry entries. Go to Start/Run and run the
following:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

Hi Risa,

I've found with Excel occasionally I need to delete the Registered
File Type and then use the /regserver switch to recreate the file
type. I'm not sure if this is same for PowerPoint but it doesn't hurt
to try. :)

Open an Exploring window and go to Tools/Folder Options and on the
File Types tab delete for Excel and PowerPoint. Once this is complete
restart the computer and then try the commands again:

excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver

Hello again, Beth.

Thank you much for your continued help. Now, all the
programs in my Office Suite will open from their icons...
except Powerpoint.

Per your advice, I deleted all the registered file types
for Powerpoint, restarted the computer and ran the
command. Unfortunately, it's still giving me the error
of "This file does not have a program associated with it
for performing this action. Create an association in the
Folder Options control panel".

Do you have any more suggestions as to how to solve this
weird problem? Please let me know.

Regards,
Risa

Hi Risa,

That is strange. Are you sure you are using: PowerPnt /r?

If so they you might try running "Detect And Repair" found under the
Help menu.
