We have an ERP software package that uses Word templates to print out
reports. We started noticing that after printing these word template reports,
we could no longer print out of Excel. Outlook, etc still continued to work
fine, only couldn't print out of Excel.
We use networked printers, so I set them up on both a Server 2000 and Server
2003 using a variation of PCL and PS drivers and the problem still occurred.
We are using various makes and models and it affects them all, so it's not
printer specific. The company who created the ERP software says they haven't
seen this problem with Office 2003 and were unable to offer a solution. I
tested this in Office 2000 and the problem wasn't there, only in Office 2003.
So far, the only way I've been able to print to Excel after printing these
word templates is to either
1) restart the spooler service on the local machine
2) delete and remap the printer or
3) reboot the machine
It is happening on EVERY machine in our company so it's not machine specific
either. They are all running Windows XP SP1 and using Office 2003. It seems
as though Word is locking the printer somehow, as the Excel print jobs never
acutually make it to the queue (they don't show up in queue on the local
machine or print server). Any suggestions would be great. I have been working
on this for a month now with no other solution besides the "band-aids" listed
above. Thank you in advance.
