Problems removing all traces of Office prevents me to install Office 97

A friend of mine wanted me to install Office 97 on his Windows XP computer.
He had Office XP on earlier, but had removed it.

When I tried to install Office 97 a message said that it could not be done
as Office was already installed and it could not be installed twice.

I regret I did not copy the exact message, but that was the gist of it.

Any clues on how I can get Office 97 installed?

You need a program from Microsoft Downloads call msizap.exe - this will
complete the removal of Office XP from the system so you can install Office
97.
