In the past, users in the Center where I work have had problems saving
to our Novell server, but recently we are having similar problems when
Mac users try to resave Word and PowerPoint files to their hard drive.
In the most severe case, there is a person using Office 2004 with Mac
OS 10.3.8. She can save a file only once and then must use Save As. I
have tried removing preferences, a reinstall, creating brand new files,
logging in as a different user, repairing permissions and more with no
success.
I found a clear pattern to the errors but no cause and was hoping for
some help:
First save is OK. Second save gives message "There was an error
accessing [full path of file is given].
Click OK.
The PowerPoint file then disappears and is replaced with a file called
PowerPoint Temp.
If Save is selected again, the following error appears: "[file path and
file name] : File name is read-only. Do you want to save changes under
a different name?"
If you say no and close the file, the PowerPoint Temp file disappears
and the original file reappears. Any subsequent attempts to save will
offer the read only error (only the first attempt to save an exisiting
file will give the access error).
Because previous problems seemed to involve the Temporary Items folder,
I searched for files and found a hidden Temporary Items folder with the
following path (private->tmp->501->Temporary Items). It was full of
temp files, etc. Deleted files in folder (but received file in use
error untilk everything Office-related was shut down). The folder
rebuilt itself when PowerPoint was reopened.
The folder is in the same location on the machine of another person
having intermittent problems with Word (but of the same nature--same
errors). This other person is running OS 10.3.8 with Office 10.
I'd appreciate any help!
