Problems saving in Excel 2000

I am running MicroSoft Office 2000 Professional in Windows
98 SE.
The problem I am having is Excel will not save a file.
Just goes busy for a few seconds then nothing.
"Save as" will not even bring up a window or gives an
error message that the file loaded already exists.

I removed office, deleted microsoft office folder under
program files folder, Rebooted the machine, defrag the
disk, and reinstalled office but the problem continues.

Any suggestions? The other office programs seem to work
fine.

My system is a HP 500Mhz Celeron with 192Meg of memory and
a 10 G hard drive with about 60% free.
