Problems sending mail!

I have two email accounts, both POP. One is configured to send and receive
direct via my ISP and the other is configured to send and receive via my
Gmail account. For the past couple of years everything has worked as it
should, then suddenly, I am experiencing problems sending via my Gmail
account.

Having prepared a message it then goes into my Outbox. Sometimes it will be
sent immediately and other times it takes 1 or 2 hours to be sent. I have
even had to wait a day or so for it to go. When ever I get this problem I
always do a speed test. So far the tests have been all OK during this time.

When I check the Progress window I sometimes see that nothing is happening
and other times the progress bar has reached half way where it hangs.
Periodically I get an error 111 message saying that "An operation on the
server timed out. The server may be down, overworked or there may be too much
traffic"

I live in Spain and have recently heard that the main ISP Telfonica has been
blocking various accounts that are using services other than theirs. Would
some knowledgeable member be able to confirm if there is a possibility that
my ISP s causing my problem or could it be something else.

Any help or suggestions would be really appreciated.

It is quite a possibility. Some ISPs do that in order to limit spam.
They require that you send everything through their own SMTP (which you
could try actually).

Thanks for your prompt reply. Excuse my ignorance but how would I configure

Edit the settings for the gMail account (Tools>Account) and instead of
smtp.gmail.com, enter the info for your ISP's SMTP.

Did you install the Safari 4 beta? This has caused all sorts of problems for
Entourage users. See this article on how to uninstall.

Hi Diane. No I don't use Safari. I also tried Corentin's suggestion and that
did not work either. I have requested help from Gmail but to date have not
heard anything back!

I doubt you will hear back if it's a free account.

I would go into both accounts via your web browser. Clean up your messages.
Delete any spam that's still on the server. If you have old messages stored
there, move out of the Inbox to an archive folder.

For you Gmail account:

New in Labs: Advanced IMAP Controls

Advanced IMAP Controls, a Labs feature that lets you fine-tune your Gmail
IMAP experience. You can choose which labels to sync in IMAP -- useful if
you find your mail client choking on a big [Gmail]/All Mail folder.

After enabling this Lab, just go to the Labels tab under Settings. You'll
see a new 'Show in IMAP' checkbox next to each of your labels. Uncheck the
box and the corresponding folder will disappear from IMAP.

If you continue to have problems, create a new Identity in Entourage and
enter your account info. Under the Options tab, be sure to set to leave on
server for the test. If the problems go away then this indicates problems in
your regular Identity. You can try a rebuild. Make a duplicate in the Finder
first as additional backup. A rebuild does make a duplicate, but sometimes
in the process the original and backup get merged resulting in total
disaster. It's rare but it happens.

How to rebuild:

Let me know what you find in the testing.
