problems uninstalling Office 2000

Brad

Word shuts down approx half the time within 10 minutes of
opening a document. Access will not open reports approx
40% of the time. All the office icons are missing (for
example the word icon on the program list, or a list of
files). I have downloaded the service packs and done a
virus scan. I did a system recovery back to a couple of
months ago and the icons reappeared but so did the worm
virus, so I reverted back to my current version. A
friend suggested I uninstall and reinstall office. I
tried but I can't get it to unistall. I selected
uninstall MS OFFice 2000 SR-1 Premium from the list (it
does not list just regular off2000) and it asks for the
CD. After inserting the CD it says the "This patch
package could not be opened. Verify that the patch
package exists and that you can access it, or ocntact the
application vendor ..." How can I proceed to unistall it?

Hi Brad,

If you haven't seen it already, you may want to take a
look at the following KB article, which contains steps to
manually remove Off2000:

252566 OFF2000: How to Completely Remove Office CD1 on
Windows 2000 - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;en-us;252566

The steps in the article are very detailed, and not
always req'd. In a nutshell, you should be able to use
the following steps:
1) Delete the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office folder
(if you have standlone Office apps installed, they may
need to reinstalled as well)
2) Use regedit.exe to delete the following keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Uninstall\{GUID} (where "{GUID}" is the product code
for the version of Office that is installed - If you
select a GUID, then check the "DisplayName" value in
regedit's right hand pane, you can see what GUID's are
tied to specific products)

3) Reinstall Off2000 and desired service packs.

Thanks!

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the response. I did as you suggested. I
believe I have uninstalled Office. BTW, I am running XP
home on a 3 month old laptop. WHen I try to reinstall
office from the CD I get the same error: "This patch could
not be opened> Verify that the patch exists and that you
can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify
that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."

Any ideas?
Thx,
Brad
