problems with AVI files in PowerPoint 2003

Hello

My wife is having problems with a ppt created in
PowerPoint XP (spanish)/ WMP8 / W2K Prof. (spanish).

We made a sw upgrade (PowerPoint 2003 (english)/WMP
9.0/WXP Prof.(spanish)), but now when she inserts an AVI
video in the ppt and she double-click it, the video
window goes to blank. Same behavior when we start the
slide show. We hace reproduced the problem in 2 laptops,
both with the same sw configuration.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Check for an updated video driver for your machine and make certain you have
the patchs applied to both Windows and PowerPoint (Office).

Hello Austin and thks for the advice. Unfortunately it didn't work. We have all the drivers, Windows and Powerpoint patches up to date. Even more, I red your article (http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00099.htm) and booted in safe mode. Same error. But (as you pointed in the same doc.) we could see the AVIs in mplay32.exe. We could also drag and drop it inside a ppt and worked! The only difference is the bar with the play/pause/stop buttons. Yet we don't know yet about the root cause of the problem.
Now we face another problem: if we drag/drop a .WMV (created with Windows Media Player), and try to doble-click it we have a BSD! Is that a codec problem? We also noticed that a wmv file could not be inserted in a std way in a ppt slide.

What video codec is being used for the AVI?

To check:

1) Open the video in Windows Media Player
2) File -> Properties

I have seen this problem with AVI files which are encoded using the "DV
Video Encoder" and was able to get them to play by changing the file
extension from *.avi to *.mpg.
