Problems with Cyrillic

I use Office X for Mac on my MacBook. I work in the UK and Russia. I
have had to live with files in Russian opening with dashes (-) instead
of characters. Has this problem been solved yet? I saw the following
thread in the archive which was not optimistic. I should add that the
problem holds for Word and Powerpoint as well as Excel. Your answer
suggests that there is a solution for Word?

"Paul,
Thanks for your mail. Mac Excel X supports Mac Roman characters and, if

registered as Japanese or when using Japanese Excel X, Mac Japanese
characters.

Russian/Cyrillic characters won't display correctly as you have seen. I

don't know of any work around. However, we are aware of customer
interest in
expanding the characters supported by Mac Office applications and are
looking into it.

The problem is fixed in XL2004, which supports Unicode characters. XLv.X
does not (and won't be updated to do so).
