Problems with downloading from FTP site

Hello all,

I am having a lot of trouble downloading ADAWARE freeware using the
suggested FTP link. In fact, I cannot open any ftp site (even using filezilla
ftp client). I've tried a number of times to download but every time I click
on the link (e.g. ftp.downlad.com) there opens a small FTP window and then
nothing happens. I've done this with and without firewall. Same result each
time. I have XP with sp2. I also have McAfee but as I mentioned, I've tried
downloading with firewalls disabled but no luck at all. Any idea as to what
is happening and what could be the solution? Your help is greatly appreciated.
