Problems with Fax Merge from Word to Outlook

I found a May, 2003 posting which came close to describing the problems
I have with fax merge from Word 2003. The process wants to use the
Outlook contacts list and gives an error message for every fax number
in my data source.

Part of the exchange in the May, 2003 posting included this:

For fax merges, the phone number has to be in one-off format. Explained

Unfortunately, even though I followed all the instructions carefully,
the format "FAX:1,###-###-####" does not make the process work, and I
get the message "Microsoft Outlook cannot find FAX:1,###-###-#### in
the contacts list." for every one of the data records I merged. Is
there another format to be used?

FWIW, I'm running Windows 2000 and Office 2003 w/current service packs.

So what is your question? In what way is the answer I provided there
insufficient?
