Problems with formulas in Excel 2003

When I try to create a formula ex =1+1, the formula doesn't calculate, it's
just the text in the cell.
Is there any settings I have to change?

Maybe the cell containing your formula is formatted as text? Select the
cell and click on Format | Cells | Number tab | Category: General | OK.
