Problems with Large Documents >5MB saved from Word 2000

Craig

I have a problem with very large files created in MS Word
2000. The file size is larger than 5MB and the problem is
1)Always shows current page as page 0 despite the fact
that most files are 200+ pages with lots of formatting
and graphics
2)VERY, VERY slow - latency is so bad that it makes
working on the file close to impossible ie. scrolling
down or search within the document is painful

Thank you

5 Mb and 200 pages are not exceptionally large for a Word document, but
there are a number of reasons for excessive file size, including:

1. Fast Saves: Disable this at on the Save tab of Tools | Options.

2. Preview Picture: Clear the check box on the Summary tab of File |
Properties.

3. Versions (File | Versions): Make sure "Automatically save version on
close" is not turned on.

4. Revisions (Tools | Track Changes):
Highlight Changes: Make sure "Highlight changes on screen" is turned on.
Accept/Reject Changes: If "Accept All" or "Reject All" is available then
revisions are present; accept or reject all changes, then turn Track Changes
off.

5. Embedded True Type fonts (Tools | Options | Save)

6. Embedded graphics: When feasible, it is preferable to link the graphics.

7. Document corruption: See
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/CorruptDoc.htm.

You will find that scrolling improves if you have more memory and/or you
switch to normal view for editing, ensuring that repagination for normal
view is disabled. You can switch to print layout view and allow
re-pagination when the document is close to finished.

Thanks Graham:

This is useful though most of those settings except the
true type font setting were already in place. The fact is
most of our files are even larger and closer to 10MB but
should be ok.

Switching to NORMAL view makes a big difference for
latency BUT the problem of pagination with every page
showing zero or an inaccurate number still persists. Also
the total page size is not accounted for
properly/accurately ie doc is really 200+ pages but only
shows that I am on page 1 of 14 not 4 of 200? Any
thoughts?

I will check the corrupt documents link you sent me,
thank you.

Note that you do *not* want fonts embedded; this is one of the factors that
causes file bloat.
