problems with mail merge - blank lines

when setting up a merge, I have selected that all blank lines should not be
printed, but they are. I have uninstalled and reinstalled office several
times to no avail. I have also reset up the merge several times each time
the same fault occurs. can anyone help? Word 2000.

You can force Word to comply using conditional fields

{Mergefield field1}{IF {Mergefield field2} <> "" "
{Mergefield field2}"}{IF {Mergefield field3} <> "" "
{Mergefield field3}"}etc
