Problems With My Webmaster

W

I have elected a foreign country to design my website at a very low
price. Now that I want to make changes and update it, this company is
trying to get more money out of me by chargeing for every little
detail. This was discussed in the begining that all updates will be
at no cost. Now they have made a reverse rule that all updates are
subject to fees.

This I don't mind, but the fees are outrageous.

I would like to save my website and take control or transfer it to
another webmaster who can make prompt updates.

How can I do this? Please help.

IANAL (I am not a lawyer),

As I understand it, you can change your named servers (the web host's
server that has your files on it) without much of a problem, though
sometimes there is a window that is blacked out - usually a month before
to a month after you renew your domain registry.

While the files are yours, and you should be able to get them, I see two
problems. The first is that you may not have the program they were
designed in. The second one is that having to deal with a company
located in a foreign country is going to be problematic.

I use WebPlus and it allows me to download a site, which includes
scripts and follows links. Not perfect, but if your site is not real
complicated, it would work.

OTOH, if you know coding (which I suspect you don't as you hired someone
to do the site for you) you can do a "View Source" and copy/paste it
into something like notepad, then save it as an htm or html file. When
uploaded to your new host, it should look exactly as it did.

No use in pointing out now that if a deal sounds too good to be true, it
probably is.

Try finding a new designer/web host first and ask them if they can help with
the problem. You may find that they know the tricks of the trade.

Hopefully you own the domain?

What's the URL to the site?

you obviously fell victim to a scam. There are so many hosting companies out
there who provide a website creator right on their site. I use 1and1.com,
but have only used their website builder once. I usually just create my own
site in publisher, deamweaver or front page. I would report them to the
federal trade commsission so they can make other American consumers aware
this company is unethical. They may also stop them from doing business in
the states. I guess the rule "you get what you pay for" applies here.
Cheaper isn't always better. And too bad because this company gives legimate
foreign companies a bad name.
