Problems with numbering

Hi --

I have been reading the information on this site and at mvps.org regarding
Word's bullets and numbering.

I have set up my numbering using my styles, not by selecting the menu
options. However, I do think I'm in a situation where I have checked the
"automatically update styles" option in my document in order to get the
latest changes in the associated template, and I have broken the link to one
of my numbering styles.

On mvps.org, there is an article mentioned at
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/Numbering/CureListNumbering.htm on how to cure,
once and for all - hopefully - maybe, the numbering issues -- but the link to
that article is broken! Could one of the mvp's help me out and get me the
correct link to that article?

Thanks so much.

Hi Rhewell

The page you're referring to seems to have gone walkabout. The general
consensus is that it largely contained links to newsgroup messages.

The Automatically Update Styles option rarely works well with numbered or
bulleted styles, but the following may help with that:

How to safely update a document's styles from its template
without using the Organizer (and how to make the Tools + Templates and
Add-ins dialog safe)
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/MacrosVBA/UpdateStyles.htm

If that doesn't work, then try going through the steps on the following page
to re-create your numbering:

How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft Word
document

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, Shauna. The "care and feeding" of numbered styles has
certainly been challenge!! I appreciate your help.

Dear Shauna: I used the technique that you explained to me by setting up the
heading styles as mentioned in outline numbering in microsoft. Question is
when I set up the first heading I based it on no style. #2 heading based on
#1 heading etc. Well, the #3 heading had something like this:

3. US attorney
3.1 US Court
a. Smart case

3.2 Civil Court
b. Gilmore Case

3.3 Supreme Court
c. Super Mom
i. see addendum

4. US Docket

Okay how do I set up the 3.1 indent and what do I base it on?
I had a rather difficult time trying to figure out the outline? Also, where
do I put my curser when I want to start the 3.1? It just won't move like it
should or like I read for some reason.
