Problems with Office updaters and Panther 10.3

G

George Kriza

My OS X conversion went well, and it seems to have lots of great
features.

Anyway, I had one serious problem. After I did the OS upgrade,
everything worked, as far as I could tell. Then, however, I got the
wild eyed idea to upgrade my Office X. I believe I was at the 1.3
level, and after going to the Microsoft Mactopia site, I noticed that
there was a 1.4 and 1.5 upgrade that I hadn't installed. I went ahead
and did that and the scripts seemed to run successfully. HOWEVER,
after I did that all the Office apps would load but then freeze.
Which is where I am at this moment. So if you have a solution to
this, feel free to explain it to me. I hate to have to reinstall
Office from the disks again and go through 5 upgrades.

I did get a message telling me that a database daemon couldn't quit
when I tried to rerun the 1.5 installer, and it told me to look in a
read me file, which I have no idea where it is... So I don't know if
that's my problem or something else is my problem. After running the
updates, two of the apps show they are on version 1.4 and two show
they are on 1.5 in the get info windows.

Want to see my install logs? Let me know:

Since I can't use Excel, Word or Powerpoint... .HELP!

Thank you.

I just upgraded to Mac OSX 10.3 today. After that reinstalled OfficeX and
upgraded back to 10.1.5.

Here's what you may need to do:

1. Do a full install of MacOSX 10.3
2. Install every upgrade for MS Office X even if you think you don't need
them.

Hope this helps.

Notice ... if you use the Auto-sync feature of iDisk, you will have to
disconnect from the internet in order to prevent update 10.1.2 from
stalling while "Gathering Information"

You only need 3 upgrades.

Confusing isn't it. We have the version info listed along with the upgrades
needed on the Version Page:

I performed a clean install of Panther and then reinstalled Office vX
from CD. But when I come to use the Office 10.1.2 update, when it gets
to 'Gathering Information', my iBook crashes and I get a system
message telling me I have to restart my computer.

Tried repairing permissions beforehand and I don't have an ethernet
connection, so it's not the VISE installer looking for a .Mac volume.
Any ideas?

Use "Remove Office" It's located in the Value Pack folder on the Office X
CD. You'll need your CD key when you install.

One other thought...is this a full installer or an upgrade?

I have tried removing Office using 'Remove Office' and then installed
(full version) and tried updating again to 10.1.2, but the system
still crashes. I even tried reinstalling Panther (an erase and install
once again) and then installing and updating Office as the first
installed application, but no joy.

I also tried installing and updating it on my new iMac running a clean
installation of Panther and had no trouble at all updating all the way
to 10.1.5. However, it seems from the discussions on the Apple support
site, that I'm not the only one having trouble with this.

Hi Sam,

Please post as much detail about your system as you can. Perhaps something
in common will become apparent, which would greatly help in troubleshooting.

Processor, memory, etc. Anything that might be unusual. Language settings.
Everything like this is important.

I am having trouble updating Office vX to 10.1.2 on a dual USB iBook
700MHz combo with 384MHz RAM, 20GB HD after an erase and install of OS
10.3. Main language is English. Office was the first third party
application installed with no active network connections at the time.

No trouble encountered, however with installing and updating Office vX
on an iMac 17" 1.25 GHz superdrive (512MB RAM, 160GB HD, AirPort
Extreme and Bluetooth, English), again after a clean installation of
Panther and as the first user installed application.

Hope this is info is useful.

I'm having the same problems AND the problems listed in the posts
about the Visual Basic Editor missing upon starting up Word or Excel.

But I'm not using Panther.

My home machine, a G4 Cube 400 with 256MB RAM, 20GB HD running
OSX 10.2.6 started first with looong pauses when copying pasting,
switching between files (like 2-3 minutes) a month ago.

Then my office machine, a Dual G4 500 with 500MB RAM, 40GB HD also
running 10.2.6 started having the Visual Basic Error problem. I installed
the updaters today to fix this inconvenience. The first few times I
opened Word it took a full minute to create a new file, beach ball
spinning until the Adobe PDF toolbar showed, then twenty seconds
later the main toolbar showed and Word was functional.

But by the end of the day the beach ball just keeps spinning and I have
to force quit. It may or may not be relevant that I can double-click on a
document in the Finder to open it and it does show the document, lets
me reposition the cursor by clicking around, but then hangs upon the
first key press.

What's wierd is that the beach ball also shows up (but only for a minute
or so before relinquishing control) on the Cube upon the first key press!

My PowerBook running Panther has NO problems with Word or Excel.

Finally, I'm unable to find my original CD's in order to reinstall Word. Is
there a way to get new CD's so that I can run the uninstaller? Right now
I'm totally unable to use Word on my work computer!
