Problems with opening some word doc

I am currently running XP Professional and have office 2003 Professional
installed. All functions seem to operate correct ( they have been installed
for several years).

Currently, I have received several email's with attachments from a know
user. The files were all scenned by Norton to verify that they were not
infected.

When I click on the file and try and open it, word states and the file
briefly flashes onto the screen and then the entire program closes.

If I reopen the Word program, the files have been recovered. However if I
attempt to open them again the same thing happens and the program closes.

If I download the file to a thumbdrive and then use them on a different
computer using Office 2000 Professional and Word 2000, I am able to open the
file and everything works correctly.

Does anyone know what I need to do in order to get these files to open on my
computer?

Have you saved the attachment documents to your HDD first, then opened them
in Word? What version of Word are you using and what version is the sender
using?

Thanks for your response. Yes I tried to save them to my desktop first and
then open them. The same problem arises.

I am using Word 2003 and I am not sure what version that the sender is
using. I can't keep it open long enoough to find out.

After saving to your local HDD, open Word and use File, Open, select the
document and use Open and Repair. Does that work?
